Timothy McDaniel’s contributions to the legacy of Philip Barbour High School can be traced to two different eras. First among them are his four years as a Colt student and athlete and then, later, throughout a three-decade span as a teacher and coach in Barbour County, split by more than a decade spent working in the local coal industry.
Tim graduated with honors in the top ten percent of his Class of 1974, was a two-year member of the National Honor Society, and served as an officer for both his class and the PBHS Student Council. He represented his school at Mountaineer Boys’ State and was active in the Key Club and SPQR organizations.
Active during all sports seasons, Tim participated in the PB basketball, baseball and football programs. He was selected to the first team All-Big 10 Conference Team in 1974 and also was named to the WV All-State Basketball Honorable Mention squad his senior season. He played in the Monon Valley All-Star basketball game that year as well. Finally, during the summer of 1974, Tim was chosen as a member of the All-Area American Legion baseball team.
Mr. McDaniel went on to attend Alderson-Broaddus College to secure an associate degree in Mine Management. He applied this knowledge to his career at Badger Coal Company from 1974 to 1985. He then began his transition to the field of education by earning a BA in Education with specializations in Gifted Education and General Science in 1986. He later completed his Master of Arts program in Education from Salem Teikyo University in 1998.
Tim began his teaching career as a substitute in 1987 before securing a special education position the following year. He then accepted a position at Philip Barbour High School that lasted from 1988 until his retirement in 2016. Over this span he taught General Science, Environment Science, Intro to the Majors and Principals of Technology, while serving as a class sponsor for four different graduating classes.
His coaching career began with girls’ and boys’ track at Philippi Middle School and then at Philip Barbour High School. He spent many seasons as an assistant in the Colt football and basketball programs. Perhaps best remembered as PB’s head baseball coach, Tim worked closely with the boosters to improve the facilities with its first field lights, infield turf and new dugouts.
Mr. McDaniel received the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2002. He was also named recipient of the Harry J. Hadley Award for Teaching Excellence from Fairmont State in 2007-08.
His community involvement highlights include being elected to the Barbour County Commission in 2003, where he continues to serve today. Over the years, he has coached youth football and baseball in the county. Tim has also served in several capacities at the Mt. Vernon U.M. Church, including teaching the high school Sunday School class for more than 20 years. He is a member of the Bigelow Lodge 52 AF and AM, and the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of Clarksburg. A lifelong resident, today Tim and his wife, Judy, reside in the Tacy Community. They are the parents of two sons, Adam and Ryan.
