Susan Shaw McBee was the top academician in her graduating class at Philip Barbour High School with a perfect 4.0 GPA, ranking first in a class of 175 students. She represented her classmates as their valedictorian during the 1984 Commencement Exercises. During her years at PBHS, she was a member of the yearbook staff and was active in the drama club and cheerleading. Additionally, she found time to complete dual-level college coursework through Alderson Broaddus College.
Following graduation, Susan went on to attend A-B full-time, graduating cum laude in three and a half years with a degree in Chemistry in 1987. During this period, she worked a full-time job and assisted with the Battler band program.
From there, Ms. Shaw McBee attended the Antonin Scalia School of Law at George Mason University in Virginia, where she graduated in the top fifth of the Class of 1996. She accomplished this feat as a wife and mother of two young children.
Susan used her legal training and experience to form a law firm in 2016 with three close colleagues. The only female in the group, which now features 24 employees, and she serves as its managing partner. The firm handles chemistry and biotech matters related to intellectual property, specializing in patents. Many of the company’s clients are based in Europe.
She has been married for more than three decades to her husband, Mark McBee, also a PB alumnus. The couple has three children, Seth, Hannah and Aisling. The family lived in the Washington D.C. area for 28 years before relocating to Florida in 2015. Still active in extra ventures today, Susan ran the New York Marathon in 2013 and participates in Aisling’s school functions, where she serves as a member of the School Advisory Council.
