Stephen E. Redd was widely known as an outstanding athlete and leader during his four years at Philip Barbour High School and later at West Virginia University. A member of the Colt Class of 1989, he received various honors in football, basketball and track during his tenure at PB, while also serving in several key leadership roles.
An athletic powerhouse, Steve culminated his football career in the Columbia Blue and White by being named to the AAA first team All-State and All-Big Ten Conference squads in 1988-89, along with selections to the All-Mon Valley and All-North Central WV teams. During the spring season, he also earned multiple All-Conference championships in the realm of track and field, specializing in the discus and shot put events.
Off the field, Mr. Redd made his presence known as well. He was elected as either class vice-president or president during each of his high school years, and his fellow students selected him as Philip Barbour’s student council president in 1988-89. Steve represented his school and county as the elected Governor of Mountaineer Boys State in 1988, and went on to serve as West Virginia’s representative to Boys Nation in 1988-89.
Steve went on to a stellar career at West Virginia University following his graduation, one marked by great achievements in the classroom, student government and the sports arena. As a freshman for the 1990 Mountaineers football team, he earned a starting position at defensive tackle, accounting for 34 tackles before suffering a career-ending injury. In 1992, he established a long-standing weight lifting record at WVU when he bench-pressed 550 pounds.
The Philippi native capped off his college career when he was elected as student government president by the student body for the 1992-93 term. Steve Redd is the son of the late Bruce and Thomasina Redd, revered members of the faculty at Alderson Broaddus College for many years. Today, he resides in Atlanta, Georgia.
