While a student at Philip Barbour, Paul Szolis represented the true meaning of a multisport athlete. Paul is among the most versatile athletes to wear the Columbia Blue and White at PB, earning 9 varsity letters in 3 sports: football, wrestling, and track and field.
Paul was a Football Team Captain in 1981 and a starter for three years on varsity. He earned All-Conference at Linebacker and All-State at Linebacker in 1981. His leadership abilities and performances as a member of the Colts varsity football team earned Paul a Football Scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan College. He was a four-year starter at Wesleyan and lettered four years in football while earning his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and Minors in Teacher Education and Psychology.
Paul was on the wrestling team during the winter sports season as a member of the Wrestling Colts. Paul again displayed his athletic ability on the wrestling mat as he became an All-State wrestler in his second year of wrestling with a fourth-place finish in the Unlimited Weight Class at the WV State Tournament his Junior year. Expectations were high as Paul entered his senior year in wrestling. Paul lived up to the expectations placed on him. He would win individual Championships in numerous tournaments, including the Big Ten Conference and Region Two Tournament. Winning the Regional Tournament qualified Paul for the WV AAA State Tournament. He didn't disappoint anyone in attendance as he won matches against opponents from Parkersburg HS, Huntington East HS, Parkersburg South HS, and Logan HS Joe Moore, a two-hundred ninety-five-pound wrestler. Paul accomplished this after weighing two hundred and twelve pounds at the state championship and becoming the First State Wrestling Champion in Philip Barbour High School history.
During the spring, Paul was a member of the track team. He threw both the shot put and discus received 3 varsity letters, and earned All-State recognition in his third varsity sport.
After thirty years in the corrugated industry, Paul now runs his own business and lives in South Carolina with his wife, Mary Ellen.
