Although Linda Nestor Sandusky graduated with Philippi High School’s Class of 1963 while the county’s new consolidated high school was still under construction a few miles away, she claimed her Columbia Blue and White stripes many times over as a member of the PBHS staff. Following high school, she earned college degrees from West Virginia University in 1967 and 1975. After spending her first three years as an educator in New Jersey, Linda came home to Barbour County to serve as a teacher, coach and athletic director for more than three decades, from 1971 until her retirement in 2002.
While teaching language arts, physical education and driver education in the classroom, she soon became immersed in the Colt athletic program, first as a coach and later as the school’s athletic administrator. She personally started PB’s tennis and cross-country programs and was the school’s first coach in each. Linda was honored by her peers across the state as the West Virginia cross-country Coach of the Year for 1983-1984.
In 1987, Ms. Sandusky became one of the first two female high school athletic directors to be appointed in the state. Known as tireless worker and staunch supporter of PBHS students and athletes among state and conference colleagues, she held that position for fifteen years until her retirement from public education.
During her tenure as AD at the school, she was instrumental in further expanding Philip Barbour’s athletic program to include soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball. Linda was recognized as West Virginia’s Athletic Director of the Year in 1995.
Linda Nestor Sandusky is the proud mom of her sons, Marc and Erik Sandusky, both members of the PBHS Class of 1990, and granddaughter, Kylie. She currently resides in Greer, South Carolina.
