Dr. Joan Lynn Crites Propst graduated with high honors as a member of Philip Barbour High School’s Class of 1974. While a Colt, she took on several leadership positions, serving as yearbook editor and an officer in the Drama Club, while participating in the SPQR Latin Club. She was a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the PB Student Council as well. Over the years, she has helped organize a number of class reunions.
For the past eight years, Joan has served as the Provost/Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Alderson Broaddus University. Previously she was the Director of Nursing at West Virginia University Hospitals (1989-94) and at ABU (2000-09), and created and oversaw the international nursing program through Areliano University in the Philippines.
Dr. Propst has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout her career, including: 2009 Faculty Member of the Year at ABU; West Virginia Nurses Association Registered Nurse of the Year in 2003 and 2007; appointment to the WV Education sub-committee on End of Life Care from 1999 to present; a gubernatorial appointment to the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses from 1995-2000; the United Methodist Cross and Flame Award for exceptional service to youth; and both the Silver Beaver Award and the District Award of Merit, for outstanding service to the Boy Scouts of America.
Joan has held membership and positions of leadership in nearly a dozen professional organizations. A sampling would feature: Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honorary Society; the West Virginia Nurses Association, where she was elected to several offices, including the group’s first vice-presidency; a Steering Committee member of the Higher Learning Commission; and President of the ABU Nurse Alumni Association.
Beyond her professional contributions, Joan has been an active community volunteer, especially for faith-based and youth oriented causes. She facilitated much needed student-led service projects in the Philippines in 2008 and 2009. She also served as the Parish Nurse at the Mansfield United Methodist Church for several years. Her interest in scouting is reflected in her becoming the first female Wood Badge Course Coordinator in 2014. Dr. Propst was a Cub Scout leader for five years and a district day camp coordinator for 15 years. She also spent half a decade facilitating and coordinating courses at the National Camp School for the Boy Scouts of America.
Dr. Joan Crites Propst considers her roles as wife, mother, sister and daughter to be among her most important. She and her husband, Ben, presently live in Philippi, West Virginia.
