While Tina Wright Shriver was active in many facets of high school life, such as Student Council, FHA and the Pep Club, during her career at Philip Barbour High School, it was on the track and the court that she drew statewide accolades. The 1985 graduate is probably best remembered for her remarkable string of three straight individual championships at the West Virginia state track meets during the springs of 1983, 1984 and 1985.
Clearing heights of up to 5’4’’ in the high jump helped Tina to dominate the event at the conference, regional and state levels, as she won every meet entered during her sophomore, junior and senior seasons with the exception of one, where she finished second. It is noteworthy that she also qualified for state meets at Charleston in the long jump and discus, earning fifth place recognition in the latter event.
During the winter sports seasons at PB, Tina was a strong presence under the hoop as a forward on the successful Lady Colt basketball squads of the early 1980’s. Known for her rebounding and tenacious inside play, she was named to several all-tournament teams during the span, and received all-conference and all-state recognition as well.
Following graduation, Ms. Wright-Shriver played basketball locally at Alderson-Broaddus College before finishing her studies in Education at the University of South Carolina Spartanburg, where she assisted with the women’s basketball program for one year. Upon earning her degree, Tina returned home to Barbour County, and she has taught and coached in a variety of areas ever since.
As a coach at Philip Barbour High School, Tina spent 18 years at the helm of the girls track program and produced three athletes who earned individual state championships, despite often not having adequate local facilities for home meets. During the span, Philip Barbour captured a Big Ten Conference title and finished as runners-up in the annual West Virginia state meet. In addition, Tina served as assistant coach in PB’s girls’ basketball program for a number of years. Her tenure there was highlighted by an undefeated 2004 junior varsity team, which posted a final record of 18-0.
Today, Tina Wright Shriver continues her teaching and coaching career at Belington Middle School. She and her husband, Randy, are the parents of three former Philip Barbour student-athletes; Brittini, Nikki and David.
